My Personal Birthing Experience

This past March I gave birth to my second child, a beautiful 9 pound girl.  After some complications during pregnancy and being given the possibility that my child may have Down syndrome, I refused to get any tests done to confirm that she may have Down syndrome because of the risks involved with the testing. Knowing that I would love my baby no matter how she came into this world.  On March 30th I began feeling contractions around 8:00 that night.  I called the hospital where I had planned to give birth around 11:00 when my contractions were ten minutes apart, the nurse that I spoke to gave me the choice to either stay home until my contractions were closer together or come in to the hospital.  I chose to stay home and begin my birthing experience in a more comfortable environment. At around 1:00 in the morning, I decided that I could not wait any longer, my husband and I headed to the hospital and were immediately admitted into a birthing room, relieved to hear that my doctor was on duty that night.  At 2:30am I received an epidural, I look up to any woman who goes through child birth naturally, what an amazing feat.  I actually slept on and off until 6:00am when my nurse woke me up and told me it was time to push.  My doctor came in prepped for delivery and three pushes later she was out, a gorgeous and healthy baby girl.  A day later I was on my way home, to begin my new life as a mother of two.  I chose to write about this experience because it was how I imagined most births go in the United States and it was very different from that of my first 32 hour birthing experience.

  1. Hello Alicia, Great Post!!! And your daughter is beautiful. Sounds like you had quite an experience. My sister had a similar birthing experience to yours. She also fell asleep and had to be woke up by the nurses to be told when to push. I wish my labor could have gone the ways hers went, she says she didnt'experience any pain until afterwards because she was given so much medicine.
