Throughout this course, Building Research Competency, I have realized how complex carrying out an organized and equitable research study actually is. There are various components that must be addresses even before the actual research study is carried out. Research is extremely beneficial to the field of early childhood. Research in early childhood affects educators, administrators and families alike. It can be used to facilitate instruction, organize classroom environments, and help families be more connected to their child's education. Narrowing my specific research question was one challenge I encountered throughout my research simulation. Understanding the vocabulary involved in research was another major challenge. The charts to record growing knowledge helped tremendously throughout the course. I now realize the importance of research in early childhood. Even if I am not going to carry out a research study, it is imperative as a professional to read, understand, and stay current with ongoing studies and research in the field of early childhood.
The timing is good for us to gain insight about research. I learned just this week that High Scope has released a report on low income children in Michigan. I will be thinking about homogeneity, the deficit model, and researcher bias - as all of these seem to be in play in this example.
ReplyDeleteAlicia,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great reflection on the course! I agree with you about the importance of early childhood research. It has and will continue to impact so many aspects of our work. It also has the potential to impact children, families and early childhood professionals in positive ways. I also agree with you about the chart assignments. It was a very effective way to learn about a sometimes difficult topic. As a result of this class and assignments like the charts, I find that when I now read research, I have a better understanding of the material and the terminology used.
Alicia,
ReplyDeleteI agree; we must keep up with the current research as early childhood education is constantly changing!
The vocabulary was quite challenging each week, and I had to always refer back. However, I have a greater respect for research after this course.
Good luck in your future courses!
Blessings,
Susan
Hi Alicia,
ReplyDeleteI too agree that research is very important to early childhood education, rather we are conducting or reading for improvement. This class has also helped me to better understand the research that I read, and also appreciate it a whole lot more. GREAT POST & GOOD LUCK!!!
Hi Alicia,
ReplyDeleteMany of us faced the challenge of narrowing down our research topic. I can agree that the research chart and weekly assignments assisted me with understanding research. I enjoyed reading your blog and discussions. Good luck in the future.
