Brother-in-Law
“Culture is a group of people that have similar beliefs and qualities.”
“Diversity is an old wooden ship...just kidding! More than one race or ethnicity coming together for peace and harmony.”
Cousin
“Culture is different people living in the same society.”
“Diversity is differences in people coexisting in society'”
Neighborhood Acquaintance
“Culture is a way to distinguish people from one another.”
“Diversity are the unique differences in people.”
The definitions I received were very narrow minded and did not involve the complexity of culture and diversity. Although culture and diversity involve differences in people, they also encompass similarities and unique differences that go beyond race and ethnicity.
Hi Alicia,
ReplyDeleteYour respondents were giving a true definition of what society believes culture and diverisity to be. They don't realize that it's the surface of culture and diversity that we base so much of our views on; deeper analysis requires more thought and thoughtfulness.
Hi Alicia,
ReplyDeleteI agree that culture can also be defined as similarities and differences. Many people do not understand how complex culture and diversity is. You did a great job of defining diversity and culture.
Certainly your guests have a more traditional definition of culture and diversity. I would venture a guess that most Americans think along these lines.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, a version of this course needs to be a requirement for ALL high school students. We would find ourselves in a more enlightened and peaceful world.
Hi Alicia:
ReplyDeleteI am laughing at your brother-in-law, talking about an old wooden ship lol. But nonetheless, for them not to be enrolled in a class like we are at the moment, I think they did the best they could to answer the questions. I like what your cousin said about diversity. I think that was pretty how that was said. Maybe you can give them a Culture/Diversity 101 course and "put them up on game" what they really are lol.
