This piggybacks on my last post...I'm outside, my kids are running through the sprinkler and I'm reading the latest Parents magazine, in section titled "Classroom Confidential" where teachers and other school staff give pointers on how to make sure your child is successful in school, I read a quote written by a New York phys-ed teacher (2012). Here's what he said under the heading "help your child fit in:" "The parents of a first-grade boy with long, curly blond hair wouldn't let him get a hair cut even after his classmates made fun of him and called him a girl. No student should should be teased or bullied for any reason. But let's face it: Kids can be cruel" (p. 124).
Now obviously if my son wanted to get his hair cut, we would cut his hair. I'm wondering where is the teacher, shouldn't this be a teachable moment. That little boy shouldn't want to get his hair cut because he's getting teased. He shouldn't be getting teased or bullied in the first place. This is great example of why we need anti-bias education!
